7 Tips to get the most out of your recording session

1.  Have new strings on your instrument.  Bring extra.  If your a drummer, put new drum heads on and have extra ready to go.  Oh ya, tune your drums too.

2.  Bring a tuner and USE it. Seriously, I don't care how good your ears are, use a tuner and tune all the instruments to it.  Non negotiable.

3.  Don't bring friends who have no other purpose than to hang out and 'watch sh$# go down”. Unless they serve a useful purpose, like carrying equipment, leave them home.  Being prepared and focused is what will excel you to the next level.

4.  Be prepared – If your not prepared, you are wasting everyone's time.  Unless you have a major label shelling out money for your studio time,  you need to put off going to the studio until you, and everyone you are recording with, is ready and practiced on their parts.  This means if you rap out a killer verse, and the engineer says “let's double track that!” You shouldn't be saying “oh man, play that back, I don't remember what I did”

5.  If you are recording in your home studio, have everything set up in advance.  When you are in tracking mode and feeling the 'groove',  the last thing you want to do is ruin that by setting up another mic and having to untangle that snake pit of chords you have lying around in the corner. (We all have a snake pit of chords, don't feel bad)

6.  Leave your phones outside the recording area.  1) It's a distraction and 2) You don't want your favorite Toe Jam and Earl ring tone magically appearing on your best track.  You can take selfies later while everyone else is winding up chords.

7.  Know what you want to get out of your session before you start.  We all know plans often get changed and things can, and do go wrong.  But having goals and a plan to get there will always be better than “winging it”.
